One reason I'm glad I teach grade 5

Two recent stories from friends of mine who teach grade one and two gave me a reason to be glad I work with the older ones*...

A few weeks after colouring her hair, a grade 1 student asked my friend, "Madame, is your hair real?" Bewildered, she answered, "Of course it's real! See?" and pulled on it to prove it. "Oooooh," said the student, "Then do you colour it because it's turning white?"

hehehehe!!! (L, you're still a hottie, don't worry!!)

And another friend a while back was getting her kindergarten class to do self portraits. She was sitting on the carpet with the kids and drawing a picture of herself as an example. When she was done, one of the kids pointed out, "But Madame, you forgot to draw all your wrinkles!"

Nothing like kids to help boost your self esteem. *grin*

* Aw, who am I kidding, those kids are CUTE!!!

Hahahahaha....

When I worked as a youth pastor, one day I wore one of those ponchos that were in style a few years ago...... I wasn't too sure about it, but it was on sale for 5 bucks at the Gap, so I went for it.

After church, I was sitting in my office, and one of my students walks by... "Dude, Sarah, what are you wearing - is that a table cloth?"

Hahahahahahahaha!!!

I'm not gonna lie, I never wore it again! I chalked that 5 bucks up as gone!

Ok, you know what? I've been avoiding this story because it's sounds so awful, but it's the first thing that came to me when I read your blog...

I remember when I was about 12 or 13 years old and I was in the car with one of my parents and a friend who had been over for the first time. We might have been driving her home. I don't remember. What I do remember is my 3 year old little brother who was also in the car, STARING at her, and being very very quiet. Unusually quiet. Finally he spoke and said loud and clear "How come your skin is so black?!" :oO I looked at my friend and I was stunned (I didn't know she was black until he said that! -No I'm kidding about that part! Lol!) I didn't know what to do first. Apologize to my friend, jump out of the moving car.... Remember we were in a CAR and all strapped in with no escape, and we were all no more than a few inches away from each other, so it's not like I could pretend I hadn't heard him or take him into another room for a moment. She actually handled it EXTREMELY well. Didn't seem embarassed or uncomfortable or anything. She told him, SO calmly and with such an amazing amount of maturity "Different people have different colored skin. My skin color is black. My family has the same skin color too." And then my brother, who had still not stopped staring at this girl the entire time, spoke again, and with all the volume and incredulousness of a 3 year old said "Yeah but how come you're SO BLACK!!!"

-I'm guessing he hadn't gotten out much before that age!

yeah kinder kids do say a lot of "nice" things to all of us at work (i.e. "your hair is bushy", "are you going to have a baby"- to a slightly larger woman, "why do your teeth look like that?"). we just keep giving them the answer that "everybody is made differently". fortunately they're really cute most of the rest of the time so its ok

I can always remember as a 6 year old asking my mum why grandad had so many hairs coming out of his nose and saying it was disgusting , now many years later when it is a constant battle to keep mine trimmed I realise how cruel we can be as children because as they say "out of the mouth of babes" comes pure truth

Little kids are so hilarious. When I used to sub in kindergarten there would invariably be at least one kid who asked about my moles.
